How do wind turbines generate electricity?

In order to survive and develop its own civilization, human beings exploit and consume various resources on the earth in large quantities, and continue to create pollution and greenhouse effect. At present, as the earth’s mineral energy is increasingly consumed, renewable energy such as wind power, solar energy, water power and tidal energy are all clean energy sources, which can continue to provide effective support for the development of human civilization in the future.

However, there has always been a saying that wind power has an impact on the ecological environment and may also cause global warming. It is a kind of waste energy. Many countries have been dismantling wind turbines in large numbers. How can good clean energy cause global warming? Why is it so dangerous?

Let’s first look at how wind turbines generate electricity.

Solar power generation is a direct power generation method that uses solar-grade semiconductor electronic devices to effectively absorb solar radiation energy and convert it into electrical energy. It is the mainstream of today’s solar power generation. Wind power generation is the use of wind to generate mechanical energy to generate electricity. There are two main ways to convert wind into mechanical energy:

1. Horizontal shaft generator

2. Vertical axis generator

The horizontal axis generator uses the wind to blow through the blades of the propeller, and uses its pitch to generate lateral force, so that the wind energy is converted into the mechanical energy of the propeller, and then drives the gearbox to change speed to convert the low speed into high speed, thereby driving the generator to generate electricity. , supplemented by a speed change device in the gearbox, so that the generator maintains the rated output frequency and voltage.

In order to make the wind turbine obtain as much power as possible, the diameter of the propeller of the wind turbine will be very large, and some even exceed 100 meters. Because the size of the wind energy is related to the total area swept by the rotating shaft driven by the blades, the wind turbine is getting bigger and bigger in order to maximize the utilization rate.

The principle of the vertical axis is similar, but the vertical axis fan has the advantage that it does not require a steering mechanism, and it can convert 360-degree omnidirectional wind into mechanical energy. However, the biggest problem of vertical axis generators is that the efficiency is relatively low, only about 40%. Therefore, most common wind power generators are still horizontal axis generators, and some types of vertical axis fans have to be given an initial torque to start. .
