Developing offshore wind power is an inevitable choice

In the southern waters of the Yellow Sea, the Jiangsu Dafeng offshore wind power project, which is over 80 kilometers offshore, continuously sends wind power sources ashore and integrates them into the grid. This is the farthest offshore wind power project from land in China, with an applied submarine cable length of 86.6 kilometers.

In China’s clean energy landscape, hydropower occupies an important position. From the construction of the Three Gorges in 1993 to the development of Xiangjiaba, Xiluodu, Baihetan and Wudongde hydropower stations in the lower reaches of the Jinsha River, the country has basically reached the ceiling in the development and utilization of 10 million Kilopower hydropower stations, so we must find a new way out.

In the past 20 years, China’s clean energy has entered the era of “scenery”, and offshore wind power has also begun to develop. Lei Mingshan, secretary of the Party Leadership Group and chairman of the Three Gorges Group, said that while onshore hydropower resources are limited, offshore wind power is extremely abundant, and offshore wind power is also the best wind power resource. It is understood that offshore wind power with a depth of 5-50 meters and a height of 70 meters in China is expected to have developed resources of up to 500 million kilowatts.

Moving from onshore hydropower projects to offshore wind power projects is not an easy task. Wang Wubin, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of China Three Gorges New Energy (Group) Co., Ltd., introduced that the difficulty and challenges of ocean engineering are very great. The tower stands on the sea, with a depth of tens of meters below sea level. The foundation needs to be made solid and firm on the seabed below. An impeller is installed at the top of the tower, and the sea wind drives the impeller to rotate and drive the generator behind the impeller. The current is then transmitted to the offshore booster station through the tower and buried submarine cables, and then sent to the shore through high-voltage means to be integrated into the power grid, and transmitted to thousands of households.
